Have yourself a frugal post-Christmas detox

Grotty, sluggish, drained and generally a bit under the weather? The pressures of the festive period combined with a hefty helping of seasonal overindulgence can leave us looking and feeling less than our best – and decidedly lacking in the finances department.

Before handing over your credit card to an eager cosmetic surgeon, why not reuse a few of those Christmas leftovers in these effective home detoxes?


A detox drink from leftover lemons

Could your liver use a livener? All those rounds of Christmas drinks will have had it working overtime, so help out this hard-working organ by drinking a squeeze of lemon juice in a mug of warm water first thing. Perfect for using up forgotten lemon halves and wedges from the back of the fridge!


A detox meal from leftover Christmas dinner bits and bobs

Soothe a discombobulated digestive system with a gently nourishing broth simmered up from the remains of Christmas dinner. Adding immune-boosting ingredients like garlic, ginger and turmeric helps stave off the traditional post-Crimbo cold.

>> Immune boost turkey or vegan broth to serve four: Peel and finely chop a couple of cloves of garlic and a walnut-sized piece of ginger. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a steep sided pot over a low heat and sauté the garlic and ginger for five minutes until fragrant but not browned. In a large jug, make up a litre of chicken stock or vegan bouillon to packet instructions – or heat up some homemade if you have it in store. Roughly chop any leftover turkey and/or cooked vegetables from the Christmas dinner and stir into the pot with a half teaspoon of turmeric and a bay leaf. Pour over the liquid to cover and leave to simmer gently for ten minutes or until the meat and/or veggies are warmed through. Season to taste, remove the bay leaf and serve.


A detox eye mask from used tea bags

An old ‘un but a good ‘un for tired peepers. The caffeine and antioxidants in black, white and green tea can help to reduce dark circles, puffiness and redness around eyes, though opt for organic if you want to reduce exposure to any residual nasties.

Squeeze out and set aside a couple of tea bags from your cuppas to cool. Remove any makeup, lie back in a warm, darkened room and relax for twenty minutes with a moistened bag over each closed eye. A light finger massage over your temples, forehead and sinus area will make you feel even more pampered. Whale sounds and chanting optional!


A detox body scrub from used coffee grounds

If you’ve been caffeinating the heck out of your insides to get through the last few weeks with sanity intact, turn a handful of those used grounds to good use on your outsides in a moisturising morning wakeup.

>> Coffee and sugar scrub: Sterilise a wide mouthed, lidded jam jar. In a bowl, mix one part sugar (brown or white, whatever’s in the cupboard) to one part used coffee grounds and one part olive oil. Add four or five drops of your favourite essential oil if you wish. Spoon it into the clean jar, seal tightly and your scrub should last for a couple of weeks.
