Long-term leases for clothes - most eco fashion yet?
Did you know that in the UK we chuck out an estimated 350,000 tonnes of clothing each year, much of which ends up in landfill?
How about if clothing companies started taking back our old clothes for reuse or recycling, much as appliance shops now have to take away our old fridges and cookers?
One Dutch company Mud Jeans has started doing just that!
The idea is simple; the jeans remain the property of Mud and you sign up to lease them for a year. After that, you can either keep your jeans or, if the jeans are worn out, you can return them to get a new pair. Mud recycles the old jeans into new products, such as hoodies, also available to rent!
All Mud Jeans are made from organic, Fairtrade cotton, so by signing up you're not only helping to cut textile waste, you're also supporting pesticide-free farming and making sure the people who produce the jeans are properly compensated for their work. It's a win-win-win!
What do you think? Would you try renting a pair?
