Nowadays, people expect more from the brands they buy from. Price and quality still matter, of course, but they are no longer the only things buyers think about. Many of us now want to support companies that do the right thing for people and the planet. This is where ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) comes in.

ESG is a way for companies to show how they look after the environment, how they treat people, and how responsibly they run their business. And in the age of ESG, brand loyalty is shifting. Customers today aren’t just buying products; they’re buying into values. A recent study revealed that 75% of consumers worldwide expect brands to contribute to their well-being and quality of life.

We see this change happening every day. People want to make better choices, and they want brands to make it easier for them. When this happens, loyalty grows naturally.

Why ESG Builds Stronger Loyalty

Trust matters more than ever, especially as consumers have become increasingly aware of “greenwashing” when companies make sustainability claims without real action because people can now spot empty promises, trust has become a major driver of long-term loyalty.

Brands that clearly communicate goals such as reducing waste, lowering emissions, or supporting local communities earn more credibility. When those commitments are backed by visible, consistent action, customers feel confident choosing them again.

People also want to feel that their everyday choices make a positive impact. When shoppers buy from brands that reduce plastic use, support ethical labour, or invest in clean energy, it gives them a sense of contribution. This creates an emotional connection, the customer feels they’re part of something bigger and not just making a purchase. That feeling of purpose makes them more likely to stay loyal, recommend the brand, and return over time.

In markets where products often look similar and offer comparable quality, ESG practices help brands stand out. When faced with two products at the same price, many consumers gravitate toward the one that aligns with their values, whether it’s better for the environment or supports social causes. ESG becomes a differentiator that not only influences buying decisions but also reinforces a positive brand identity.

Taking the First Step Toward Meaningful Change

If you’re reading this and wanting to do more but unsure where to start, you’re not alone. Meaningful change doesn’t happen overnight, but it does start with a single step. Often, that step is simply choosing one area to focus on and committing to learning as you go.

Whether it’s improving transparency, engaging your community, or setting small but authentic ESG goals, each action becomes more manageable when you break it down. We’ll break it down a little further for you:

  • Improving transparency can start with sharing what you do know and being honest about what you’re still figuring out. If you’re aware of your carbon footprint, how could you improve it? Do you need more recycling points in your offices or need to remove all desk bins? Do you have volunteer days to help your local area in conservation efforts?
  • Community engagement might begin with asking people what matters to them, listening intentionally, and showing up consistently in those conversations. Have you asked you customers, employees or audience what they expect from your brand? A short survey can provide a lot of useful information in this regard.

  • Small ESG goals can be as simple as tracking a single metric, choosing one sustainable initiative to trial, or partnering with others who already have experience in the space. It could be taking a look at the energy usage of your servers and seeing if you can reduce them. IT could be looking at pension investing and seeing if the company can move to greener pensions to help

As you begin to build that momentum, you’ll notice your environmental impact grow, but so does the trust, credibility, and loyalty around your brand. People gravitate toward organisations that show up, stay consistent, and truly care. The key is to start now, no matter how small the step. Your journey can inspire others simply by proving that progress is possible, and your commitment can set you apart in a world where authenticity matters more than ever. By choosing to take action today, you’re creating a ripple that leads to real, meaningful change for your organisation and the community around you.
