There are many clichés about how small actions lead to big results, and for good reason: it’s true. Teamwork can make the dream work, a drop in the ocean does create a wave, and yes, every little helps. These ideas resonate because they’ve been proven right time and time again. Empowering your team is the key to meaningful workplace change, and in this guide, we’ll show you how to make it happen. Our goal is unified sustainability, from top to bottom, with everyone engaged and onboard. Are you ready?

Empowering a Team Without Burdening Them

Empowerment isn’t about handing over tasks; it’s about giving people the tools, motivation, and confidence to make a difference. A team that feels “tasked” with being sustainable is likely to wonder: What exactly am I supposed to do? and Why does it matter to me? This confusion leads to frustration, and ultimately, disengagement.

To avoid this, focus on empowering your team with clear, actionable steps they feel capable of executing. When people know the why and the how, they’re more motivated to be part of the solution.

The Power of Small Actions

Think about New Year’s resolutions. Big, ambitious goals are often abandoned by February, while smaller, incremental changes have a much higher success rate. The same principle applies to workplace sustainability.

No action is too small. Consider this: swapping a single halogen lightbulb for an LED one saves 5kg of CO2e. If your workplace has 200 lightbulbs, that’s one tonne of CO2e saved—all from a simple change that requires no ongoing effort.

Make sustainability actions easy and accessible for everyone. A workplace recycling initiative won’t succeed if there’s only one recycling bin hidden on the top floor. By removing barriers and creating opportunities for participation, you’ll enable your team to make an impact without feeling overwhelmed.

Choosing the Right Actions for Your Workplace

You don’t need to know every detail of your sustainability goals to start making meaningful changes. The key is choosing actions that align with the COM-B behaviour change model, something we’ve seen success with time and time again – just like those silly cliché phrases we mentioned earlier:

  1. Capability for All: Just because an action is possible doesn’t mean it’s practical. For example, walking to the office might be an option for some, but not for employees who live 10 miles away. Ensure your chosen actions are genuinely feasible for everyone with contingencies in place for those when needed.
  1. Opportunity for All: Provide equal opportunities for participation. A lunchtime litter pick, for example, might exclude shift workers unless you stagger the activity across the day. Design your initiatives so everyone can join in, regardless of their schedule or role.
  1. Motivation for All: People’s reasons for changing their behaviour vary. Some may be driven by a passion for the planet, others by rewards or incentives, and still others by the chance to help their local community. Combine multiple motivators to engage your entire team. Also, don’t expect everyone to stay onboard for the same reason time and time again.

Walking Before You Run

Big changes don’t happen overnight. Instead, focus on small, achievable actions that everyone can participate in. Over time, these incremental steps will build momentum and lead to significant progress toward your sustainability goals. Remember, the journey to a greener workplace starts with small, accessible steps that empower your entire team.
